Coming back strong in 2011…stay tuned…

After an impossibly long winter, the Mississsippi runs free of ice and the pot hole fillers are out in force.  In Minnesota, we earn the spring.  Couldn’t imagine living forever in a place without a change of season.  Five generations of Minnesotans on my late mother’s side, and four on my father’s make it so.  Glad it is here.  It is time for some change.

And so another primary/caucus season begins.  The egos and press and media consultants descend on as one person put it, “cold white people in Iowa and colder white people in New Hampshire.”  It is a strange way to select the leader of the free world–less than 1 percent of the voting public in two non-representative states usually decide who will win the Presidency–or at least who the finalists will be.   First, don’t blame the Founders!  There is nothing in our Constitution or Declaration that says Iowa and New Hampshire must go first!  There is nothing that says we should have only two parties–we should have many more.   Yet, for all the lunacy of it all (and the fact that such states as New York, Texas and California rarely matter in the primaries–although this year they will) there is something remarkably American about it all.  The Iowa State Fair, Farmer Bob’s corn and pork chop fry, the New Hampshire diner and the Town Hall meeting.   Presidential hopefuls must meet the salt of the America Earth and pass the smell test in some very American places.  Yes it is crazy, and yes in the future there will be changes…but for it all, the people of Iowa and New Hampshire deserve credit–at least they take their special status seriously.

The night was cold and the wind bitter.  I walked deserted streets of downtown Minneapolis near 2 AM on Christmas Eve.   I was headed back from Midnight Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary.  I have been to Rome and Jerusalem, Manhattan and Miami and made it to hundreds of churches in between and I can honestly say the most beautiful service I have seen was that midnight Christmas Mass in my hometown.  We forget in an age of materialism, that we were given something that cannot be returned at the Mall of America.  We forget in an age of consumerism, that we were given something that no greenback can buy.  And we forget when our own families let us down so incredibly that we were given a family that never leaves us.  Rejoice!   The Christ has come into the world and more than two thousand years later on a dark Minnesota night we remember, we celebrate and we believe.

Many people ask me my thoughts on the current Presidential race.  As an independent who failed to start a new political party, I plan on voting third party.  Among the two-party unjust duopoly candidates, I like Obama and Biden best among the Demogouges and Mike Huckabee, John McCain and Ron Paul on the Repukacrats.   I hope there is real change, and I think Romney and Hillary would be more of the same old BS.

I am very impressed by Ron Paul’s fundraising prowess.  Wow!   4 million one day and more than 6 million this past weekend in one day!  There is a great hunger for a conviction politician, and Ron Paul offers a man of principle.   I wish he would take his money and message and many followers and run third party (as he did in 1988) or run as an independent populist like Lou Dobbs and Cain Pence like to call themselves.  The two party duopoly is a big reason for the mess we are in now and I highly doubt Ron Paul can get the votes to take the Republican nomination.  He is not running for President of the United States–he is running for the Republican nomination for President.  Big damn difference.  Republican primaries are a very small part of the electorate and I believe his unique message of limited government and freedom would reach a much wider audience–and influence many more people–if he left the Republican Party.  The GOP aint with him–why should he stay with him?  As a guy who started a website called AmericanRevolutionaries.org I wish my fellow brothers and sisters with the Ron Paul Revolution nothing but the best.  I would be happy to consider helping them if Dr. Paul leaves the Republican Party!

Every great general must address his war plan to the reality on the ground.  Over the last two and a half years I believed the best role for me was to attempt to start a new political party.  Indeed, that is exactly what I attempted.  I gave it my heart, launced the incredible AmericanRevolutionaries.org, put some of the best videos on youtube.com in the history of the net, and responded to countless letters and emails.  Yet, as I survey the field of battle, I realize that my original goal for the New Revolution Party will not work.  I am unable to raise the necessary funds and sadly, incapable of getting people off their ass.  My new goal is to become personally secure and reenter the political arena as an independent.  I encourage all patriots to continue to visit CainPence.com and youtube.com (search Cain Pence) and write me or send debt relief to PO Box 580319 Mpls. People often ask me where was my favorite place on my long quest throughout America’s Congressional Districts and Insular Territories.   I usually tell them it was my visit to Alaska where I stayed with my uncle Paul “Bunyan” Julig and his family for a week.  

Growing up, the Pence side of me–loud, arrogant, outgoing–was much more dominant.  But when I traveled America and saw the open land and found myself in Alaska where my mother’s brother built his own home in the woods and hunted moose and caribou and smoked salmon I found the other side of me.  The side of my DNA that loved the open land, the country, the woods and streams.  The Julig side that came from the country.   Thus, when I visited with the extended Julig family this past weekend to celebrate Grandma Julig’s 90th birthday, I thought about my mother, her family and her children.

Raised in a farm family of eleven in German Catholic rural Minnesota, her childhood was not full of wealth or privilege.  They were damn poor and had many hardships.  Yet, I always remember my mother telling me how she loved to see the corn dance on the prarie and enjoyed watching the sun set in the Minnesota summer.   The great joy of my mother’s life was her children and she taught us as best she could with the many burdens she carried.

Seeing her mother, now near the end of her long and incredible journey that created dozens of grandchildren and a handful of great grandchildren, I remembered my own roots.    I am a son of Minnesota–four generations on both sides, Pence and Julig.   When I see the corn dance in the setting sun across the Minnesota Prarie I feel a spirit far different from the ego of the Pence men…I feel the spirit of the land I come from, the spirit of the woman who gave me life. 

What do I most appreciate about my father?  That he had a son with a Julig woman….who was a lot taller and better looking them him!  A woman who loved the open land and dancing prarie, but loved most her own five crops, including her little boy Caino. 

We miss you Mom….yet you live on within us.
