Thank God for America

I had a vision of a journey. A dream to travel the highways and byways of my nation and learn the ways and wisdom of her people. I took an Almanac and a beat up road atlas. I slept in my car, outside, in freezing tents, at shitty motels and on more floors and couches than I care to recall. My journey and my mission were always defined--435 congressional districts, 4 insular territories and one District of Columbia. On May 8th, 2003 my quest was completed. They ask me, "What did you see, what did you find?" I will tell you:

On a mountaintop in Virginia I saw where a man named Jefferson envisioned a Republic where men had certain rights endowed my their Creator. I found a nation that prospers under the wisdom of our Founding Fathers.

On the Eastern seaboard I found great cities, built by the hands of immigrants hungry for a new life. New York, Philadelphia, Boston. Cities made great by the seekers who came there for a better life and a new beginning. I found a nation made great by the citizens of all nations.

In the Heartland I found farms and prairies, men and women devoted to family and faith. Ohio, Indiana, my beloved Minnesota. I found the truth in the statement that America is great because her people are good.

As I drove west on my horse, pistol on my side, I saw mountains and valleys, spectacular scenery and open land. Montana, Wyoming, Utah. I found that America's greatness lies not only in her people but her boundless beauty and resources.

I found a place called America, the land I love. Pilgrims, pioneers, planters. Farmers, factory workers, families and faith. They built America and they made her great. May God Always Bless Her.
